Experience the return of the Riotous Youth of Maryland as they stage their first performance since 2019. This 90-minute Romeo and Juliet culminates Riotous Youth’s semester of training, exploration and play.

Romeo and Juliet—perhaps the most famous story about teenagers ever told—has not lost its edge, nor its urgency.

In Renaissance Verona, where rival gangs paint the streets in blood and loyalty demands violence, two young people dare to love anyway. The question at the heart of the play remains as piercing as ever: when the world is fracturing around you, what does it mean and what does it take to cling together?

This spring, the Riotous Youth of Maryland—actors ages 9–15—take on Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy under the direction of two ensemble members from the Maryland Renaissance Festival. Here is a broken society reflected through the eyes of those who, like Romeo and Juliet, are only beginning to understand the weight of the world they have inherited.

‘Do you bite your thumb at me, sir?’
