FORGOTTEN PLAYS

A series of staged readings to revive unknown plays from history.

Forgotten Plays is ESPtheatre’s first ever ongoing project, one in which we perform staged readings of  ‘unknown’ plays from throughout history, especially those by female playwrights or which otherwise lift underrepresented voices.

Some plays from history feel much more progressive in their philosophies or representations than their contemporaries which survived in the canon.

With this in mind, Christine Mosere launched the Endangered Species theatre Project in 2018 with a series of readings of such ‘forgotten’ plays staged by professional actors.

Over the last 8 years, the series of script-in-hand performances has continued through a variety of spaces including Centennial Memorial United Methodist Church, the old New Spire Arts education building, Hood College’s Avalon Theatre, the old Frederick Arts Council Building and, of course, Sky Stage.

Revived in front of a live audience, these play readings are always enlightening and intriguing, providing new perspectives on the lives and thoughts of humans in different historical periods.

Previous play titles have included: Diana of Dobson’s (Cicely Hamilton), The Benevolent Sheva (Richard Cumberland), Trifles (Susan Glaspell), Fourteen, Overtones (both Alice Gerstenberg), Hindle Wakes (Stanley Houghton), Plumes (Georgia Douglas Johnson) and Her (Eulalie Spence).

The series aims to share ‘forgotten’ plays with live audiences, plays they would likely only otherwise encounter in a theatre history course.
